Incarceration Rates.


Between 1985 and 1998 the rate of female incarceration in both jails and prisons rose by 280 percent, white rates for men increased 160 percent.

Inmates who are parents.


Among incarcerated women, approximately 80% are mothers. In comparison, only 64% of incarcerated men are fathers.

Inmates with custody before incarceration.

Before incarceration, 70% of inmate mothers had their children in their care. Among incarcerated fathers, only 53% had their children living with them before arrest.

At midyear 2002, there were 113 female inmates per 100,000 women in the U.S. , compared to 1,309 male inmates per 100,000 men.
